FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
Questions about a single finish live on its own page: Venetian Plaster, Roman Clay, Limewash, Microcement.
Price and estimates
How much do plaster finishes cost per square foot?
Typical ranges are $10–16 per sq ft for limewash, $14–20 for Roman clay, $16–22 for Venetian plaster in Marmorino or polished, $18–24 for Travertino and $35–50 for microcement. Your written estimate depends on the surface, height, color and the finish system.
What is your minimum project?
Projects start at $1,800. Every project includes a visit, protection of the room, preparation and several days of layered work, so a small piece such as a single niche is priced at the minimum.
Is the on-site consultation free?
Yes. We visit, look at the surfaces, the light and how the room is used, take measurements and talk through finish options. There is no charge for the visit.
When do you make a custom sample?
After you approve the estimate. We then make a sample in your chosen color, texture and sheen, and application begins once you approve the sample in your own light.
Is your estimate fixed?
Your estimate is written and itemized, and the price holds for the scope it describes. Any change is agreed in writing before the extra work is done.
What deposit do you take?
California law limits the down payment on a home improvement contract to $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less. We follow that rule, and the balance is paid as stages of the work are completed.
Choosing a finish
Which finish is best for a bathroom?
For showers and wet floors, microcement with its full waterproofing and sealer system. For powder rooms and walls away from direct water, Venetian plaster or Roman clay with a protective finish. Limewash is best kept away from splashes.
Can you match a specific color?
Usually, yes. Bring a reference, a fabric or a stone and we tint to it, then confirm the result on your custom sample in the room’s own light.
Will my wall look exactly like the sample?
Samples help establish the color, texture and level of movement for your space. Hand-applied surfaces vary across a wall, and we agree on the acceptable range of variation before we begin.
Can plaster go over existing paint or tile?
Often, yes, once the surface is sound and correctly primed. Microcement can go over well-bonded tile. We check the substrate at the visit and include any preparation in the estimate.
Which finish works outdoors?
Limewash is the classic choice for exterior stucco and masonry. Some plaster and microcement systems are rated for exteriors; we confirm the right system for your surface and exposure.
Process and timing
How long does a project take?
For about 200 sq ft on a flat, prepared surface: limewash takes one to two working days, Roman clay two, Venetian plaster three to four and microcement four to six, because each layer needs time to set. Walls that need repair take longer. Your estimate includes the schedule.
Do we need to move out?
No. We work room by room, protect floors and furniture and keep the work area closed off. Microcement floors need a set period before use, which we plan with you.
How do you protect the house?
We agree on a protection plan before we start: floors and nearby surfaces covered, the work zone defined, dust controlled during sanding and the area cleaned at the end of each day.
What do we need to prepare?
Please take art and small items off the walls being finished. We cover and mask everything else in the work zone as agreed in the estimate.
Durability and care
Will it crack?
A finish follows the surface beneath it. Movement in the structure can show as fine hairlines, which is why we check and repair the substrate first. Small hairlines can usually be touched up.
How do I clean it?
Dust with a soft cloth and wipe marks with a damp cloth and mild soap where the finish is sealed. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners. You receive care notes for your specific finish.
Can a scratch be repaired?
In most cases, yes, and locally. Lime finishes can be touched up and blended, and microcement can be repaired and resealed.
