How it is built

5 layers, 2 days

Roman clay uses fewer layers than Venetian plaster. The work is in the trowel strokes that set its movement.

Questions

Roman Clay: common questions

Is Roman clay the same as Venetian plaster?

No. Both are hand-applied with a trowel, but Roman clay is softer and more matte, uses fewer layers and is usually faster to install. Venetian plaster can be burnished to a much higher polish.

Can Roman clay be used in kitchens and bathrooms?

Yes, away from direct water and with a protective topcoat, for example in a powder room or on a range hood. We do not use it on shower walls.

Does Roman clay have a sheen?

It is matte by nature. A light burnish brings up a soft sheen on the high points, which we agree on with you on the sample.

Can Roman clay go over painted drywall?

Usually yes, once the paint is sound and the wall is primed correctly. We check adhesion and the condition of the wall at the visit.

How do you touch up Roman clay?

Small marks can usually be blended locally with the same material. Keep the leftover material we label for you; it makes touch-ups closer in color.
