Questions

Venetian Plaster: common questions

What is the difference between Venetian plaster and Marmorino?

Marmorino is one style of Venetian plaster. It is left matte or lightly burnished, so the grain of the marble and lime stays visible. Polished Venetian plaster is burnished much further, until the surface takes on a deep sheen.

Can Venetian plaster be used in a shower?

We do not recommend it for shower walls or areas with standing water. In powder rooms and around vanities it works well with a protective finish. For showers we recommend microcement with its full waterproofing and sealer system.

Can Venetian plaster go on a fireplace or a range hood?

Yes. Fireplace surrounds and range hoods are among the most requested uses. Near a cooktop we add a protective finish so the surface can be wiped down.

Does polished Venetian plaster show fingerprints?

A highly polished surface can show marks in raking light, much like polished stone. A wax finish makes it easier to wipe. In busy areas many clients choose Marmorino, which hides everyday marks better.

How long does Venetian plaster last?

Lime plasters have been used on walls for centuries. How a wall holds up in your home depends on the substrate, how the room is used and care. We check the substrate first and give you care notes for your finish.
