How it is built

2 coats and a sealer, 1–2 days

Limewash is built in brushed coats rather than thick layers. Each pass adds depth to the movement.

  1. 04

    Sealer

A clear sealer protects the surface and makes it easier to wipe clean.

    Day 2
  2. 03

    Second coat

Evens the tone and builds the cloudy depth limewash is known for.

    Day 2
  3. 02

    First coat

Brushed in loose, crossing strokes. It looks patchy while it dries, which is expected.

  4. 01

    Mineral primer

The room is protected, then a mineral primer prepares the wall so the lime absorbs evenly.

Questions

Limewash: common questions

What is the difference between limewash and paint?

Paint forms an even film on the surface. Limewash is a mineral finish that soaks into a porous surface and dries with natural variation, so the color shifts with the light. It is matte and breathable, but less scrub-resistant than paint.

Can limewash go on exterior stucco?

Yes. Stucco, brick and masonry are natural surfaces for limewash. We check whether the stucco is painted or sealed, because that changes the primer and the system.

Why does limewash look patchy while it dries?

Lime lightens as it dries, and fresh strokes dry at different speeds. The final look settles after the last coat has dried, which is why we judge color on a dry sample.

Does limewash rub off?

A properly applied limewash is stable, but it is softer than paint and can mark if scrubbed. In busy areas we discuss a protective coat or a different finish.

Can limewash go over existing paint?

Yes, with a mineral primer made for the purpose. Without it, lime cannot grip a painted wall properly.
