In short

Microcement is a thin cement-based coating applied in layers to create one seamless surface across walls, floors, showers and vanities, often over existing tile. About 200 sq ft on a flat, prepared surface takes four to six working days, because each layer needs time to cure.

How it is built

7 layers, 4–6 days

Most of what you pay for in microcement is under the surface. This is the system over existing tile, from the tile up.

  1. 07

    Detailing and sealing

Edges and the joins with floor and ceiling refined, then two coats of water-repellent sealer and a protective varnish.

  2. 06

    Second microcement coat

A second fine coat refines the surface and evens the color.

  3. 05

    First microcement coat

The first fine coat sets the color and texture.

    Day 3
  4. 04

    Second base coat

Levels the surface and covers the grout lines of the tile below.

    Day 2
  5. 03

    Mesh and first base coat

A fiberglass mesh is set into the first base coat to reinforce the surface.

    Day 1
  6. 02

    Quartz primer

Gives the base coat grip on glazed tile.

  7. 01

    Existing tile, checked

The room is protected and the tile is checked. Loose tiles and cracks are fixed before anything goes on.

Where it works

Good places for microcement

  • Showers and wet rooms, with the full system
  • Bathroom floors and walls, often over tile
  • Vanities, tubs and benches
  • Fireplaces and kitchen walls

Where we suggest something else

Honest limits

  • Tile or floors that move or sound hollow, until repaired
  • Surfaces with rising moisture or active leaks

Investment

What microcement costs, and why.

The price follows the preparation your surface needs, the shape and height of the work, the system and how much hand work the finish takes. These ranges cover the finish system, protection and cleanup. Projects start at $1,800.

Questions

Microcement: common questions

Is microcement waterproof?

Microcement is water-resistant once sealed, but in showers it relies on the waterproofing membrane underneath and the sealer on top. We install the full system, not just the visible coats.

Can microcement go over tile?

Yes, if the tile is well bonded. Loose or hollow tiles are fixed first, the grout lines are filled, and a bonding primer and mesh-reinforced base go on before the finish coats.

Is microcement slippery?

Like any smooth floor it can be slick when wet. For shower floors and bathrooms we use a finish texture and sealer with more grip, and we show you the difference on the sample.

Does microcement crack?

It follows the surface beneath it. Movement in the substrate can show as hairlines, which is why we check and repair it first and reinforce the base coat with mesh.

How soon can we use the bathroom?

Each layer has its own curing time, and the sealer needs time before water and full use. You receive the schedule in writing with your estimate, so you can plan around it.
